Two routes
There are two common ways into an Indian college: a government scholarship or a self-funded seat. Here is what each involves, and where counselling fits in.

With free Career Bato counselling
Government scholarship applications must be your own work. The official notices for COMPEX and the other Embassy of India, Kathmandu schemes state that applications routed through consultants, agents or middlemen are liable to be rejected. Counselling can help you understand a scheme and get your paperwork in order, but you should fill in and submit scholarship forms yourself, on the official portals.

Before you pay any fee
Whether a college is suggested by a counsellor, a relative or an advertisement, a few checks protect you from expensive mistakes. These are the questions we encourage every student to ask, and to get answered in writing where possible.
Is the institution, and the specific programme you are joining, recognised by the relevant regulatory body in India?
If you plan to work in Nepal after graduating, will the degree be accepted by the equivalence authority or professional council you will need to register with?
What will the whole course cost, including hostel, food, examination fees, travel and documents, not just the first year's tuition?
What is the refund policy if you withdraw, and is it written down?
Is the fee paid directly to the institution's official account, with an official receipt?
What do current students say about the teaching, the campus and placements?
