HJBSS is the Embassy of India, Kathmandu's postgraduate route for Nepalese engineering graduates into M.E. and M.Tech. programmes in India. Like the SAARC scheme it is submitted on paper with notarised documents, and it carries strict conditions once you are placed. The questions below cover eligibility, the application set, branch choices and what you commit to after nomination.
The Dr. Homi J. Bhabha Scholarship Scheme (HJBSS) is a postgraduate scholarship offered by the Embassy of India, Kathmandu for Nepalese nationals to study M.E./M.Tech in India.
Yes, HJBSS is a supported Master's level engineering scholarship in India sponsored by the Government of India.
No, candidates awaiting final Bachelor's results are not eligible. A final graduation transcript must be submitted with the application.
Applicants must be 25 years or younger as of July 1, 2026.
Applicants are advised to specify at least three branch choices on the application form.
Applicants must have a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in their Bachelor's in Engineering (BE) and at least 50% marks in English in Class XII.
Applicants must submit three (3) sets of: recent passport-size photographs, notarized final mark-sheets/transcripts of Class XII and Graduation, a notarized English-translated citizenship certificate, and the original bank voucher for the application fee.
The application fee is NRs. 400/-, deposited in favor of Education Wing, EoI, Kathmandu at Nepal SBI Bank, anywhere in Nepal. The fee is non-refundable and non-adjustable once deposited.
The application form can be downloaded from the Indian Embassy's website, www.indembkathmandu.gov.in, and must be duly filled in or typed before submission.
Completed applications can be submitted by post/courier or in person at the Embassy of India, Kathmandu, between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm, Monday to Friday, on or before the last date.
No. Nomination by the Embassy does not guarantee admission. Confirmation depends on placement by the concerned Indian University/College, after which the Embassy confirms the admission.
No. Requests to change branch, institution, or transfer the scholarship after admission placement are not entertained, and candidates cannot reject or withdraw at a later stage without being debarred from future scholarships and required to refund the amount spent.
Selection is based on the applicant's academic record, though this does not by itself guarantee admission to any specific Indian University/College.
No. The Embassy of India accepts applications only directly from applicants and does not recognize applications submitted through education consultants, middlemen, or agencies; such applications are liable to be rejected.
Submitting incorrect information or an incomplete application form may result in forfeiture of the scholarship at any stage, including after selection.
Yes. The Embassy reserves the right to change a candidate's branch choice depending upon the placement received from the Indian University/College, even after applications are submitted.
Candidates should interact solely with the Education Wing, Embassy of India, Kathmandu, or the Consulate General of India, Birgunj, regarding the scholarship — not with any third party.
Any change in address or telephone number must be intimated immediately to the Education Wing via email or letter, with complete details.
Candidates have no right to reject or withdraw at a later stage after placement in an Indian institution. Doing so results in being debarred from future scholarships and being required to refund the entire amount spent by the Government of India.
Yes. Separate application forms must be submitted for each course applied for.
Only candidates who have already passed their Bachelor's level examinations are eligible to apply, since a final graduation mark-sheet/transcript must be submitted with the application.
