Eligibility Criteria

The Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship Scheme is easy to misunderstand. Most Indian government scholarships take students to India, and this one does not. It is financial support from the Government of India, run by the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, for Nepalese students in Class 11 and 12 in Nepal. Its aim is to help capable students from lower-income families stay in higher secondary education so that money does not force them out.
It suits a regular Class 11 student (not a diploma student) who did well in Class 10, whose family income is under the limit, and who has no other scholarship. Since you cannot hold two scholarships at once, compare MGSS with any award your school or another organisation offers before you apply, and choose the one that helps you most across both years.
How selection and renewal work
The eligibility rules show what the scheme values: your Class 10 result, your family's financial need and your status as a regular student. The official notice for each cycle describes how applications are assessed, so read the current one rather than relying on older information. Everything is handled online and messages arrive by email, so register with an address you will keep checking for the next two years.
MGSS runs for two years, not as a one-time payment. Support in Class 12 depends on passing Class 11 and sending your continuation documents on time. Build your plans around your Class 11 exams and the yearly document deadline, because missing either can end the support.
Is this scholarship right for you?
Before you start the form, check yourself against these points:
- You are enrolled as a regular Class 11 student at a recognised school or college in Nepal.
- Your Class 10 result meets the percentage requirement. If your SEE result is in grades, ask your school how the conversion should be shown and check the official notice for the accepted method.
- You can get an income certificate from your local authority. These can take time to issue, so ask early.
- Both your parents' citizenship certificates are available to scan and upload.
- You are not receiving another scholarship. If your school gives you a fee waiver or merit award, check the notice or ask the Embassy whether it counts before you apply.
Timeline: what to do and when
Dates change every cycle. In the most recent cycle listed on this site the deadline fell in early November, so the work starts soon after you join Class 11. A sensible order:
- After your SEE results and Class 11 admission: collect your mark sheet, proof of enrolment, citizenship copies and income certificate.
- When the notice is published: read it in full, then apply yourself on the official portal. Applications through agents are not accepted.
- On submission day: save your login details and download the acknowledgement receipt.
- During Class 11: study steadily, because passing is a condition for continued support.
- Every year after selection: send the continuation documents well before the yearly deadline in the official notice.
